Scott James, aged 19, from Solva, has become another Skills Wales Champion for Pembrokeshire College. Scott, an engineering apprentice, brought home a Gold medal at a recent competition held at Coleg Sir Gar. Scott will now go through to the UK heat of the WorldSkills Championships later this year.

The brief for this year’s competition was to produce a brass Plumb Bob in 6 hours. Scott’s winning piece, which he produced in 5 hours, was judged on tolerances, accuracy and precision.

Scott, who is employed by St Davids Assemblies LTD, a company that is established as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of precision components, is getting a wealth of experience from a very innovative company. Scott’s training in the workplace, coupled with classroom and practical learning, is proving to be valuable for all parties.

“Scott is doing really well, his enthusiasm for the job is priceless. Our country is up a against huge skill shortage, especially in engineering. I recommend any progressive company, of any scale, to employ an apprentice,” said Allan Thomas, St Davids Assemblies LTD.

“The course is a balance of practical and theory. It is challenging, but enjoyable; I am glad I won the prize, I want to do well for myself in College and my employer,” enthused Scott.
