For individuals with a caring nature who are drawn to the idea of counselling, this course offers the perfect opportunity to learn and practise a range of skills as an initial step toward becoming a counselling practitioner.

Is this course right for me?
These introductory courses are aimed at those who may have little or no experience in the subject and it does not lead directly to an employed role. However, it has been designed as the first step in the ladder for professional development for aspiring and practising counsellors.
This course is not suitable for anyone who has had a recent bereavement or trauma and not suitable for personal therapy.
Divided into two eight week parts:
- Part one (Counselling Communication Skills) can be completed as a standalone unit designed to develop communication skills
- Part two (Counselling Skills) covers the skills and attitudes required in counselling; Part one must be completed before commencing Part two
Part one courses normally start in the Autumn and Spring terms, and Part two courses start in Spring and Summer terms.
- No formal entry requirements
- Life skills, experience and maturity are important
- You should have some basic computer skills including being able to save and locate files and access websites
- The learner must be over the age of 19
Counselling Communication Skills
This part can be completed as a standalone qualification designed to develop communication skills and cover the skills and qualities needed in a counsellor such as paraphrasing, open and closed questions, verbal and non-verbal communication.
Modules to be studied include:
- Communication skills used in Counselling
- Paraphrase statements
- Difference between open and closed questions
- Verbal and non-verbal communications
- Barriers to communication in the Counselling settings
- Non-judgemental behaviour
Counselling Skills
To complete this part learners must first complete Part one.
This unit covers the skills and attitudes necessary in counselling, understanding of personal awareness of values and skills which may affect a helping relationship.
Modules to be studied include:
- Counselling skills theory
- Ethical approaches in Counselling
- Skills, knowledge and attitudes desirable in Counselling
- Develop self-awareness in helping settings
Learners have the option to complete course assessment/assignments or elements of the course through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.
- Continuous assessment during the course
- Portfolio of evidence
On successful completion of both parts of Level 2 learners may wish to do the Level 3 Counselling Studies course.
