The Hywel Dda Apprentice Academy provides an excellent opportunity if you are looking to join the NHS. Whilst on a structured work-based learning programme, you will be able to learn while you earn, gaining nationally recognised qualifications.

Is this course right for me?

This apprenticeship is provided in conjunction with the Hywel Dda Apprenticeship Academy it provides the necessary skills for those working in health care roles and common themes include health and safety, person centred approaches, implementing duty of care, communication, personal development, equality and inclusion.

This Level 2 qualification is primarily aimed at health care assistants working within clinical hospital settings, providing support to individuals accessing health services under the direction of a professionally registered practitioner, or registered nurse. It provides the core qualification that recognises roles currently undertaken by health care assistants.

You will attend College for one day per week.

Applications are only taken at certain times of the year, you will need to apply through Hywel Dda in the first instance, please check with the Hywel Dda Apprenticeship Academy to find out when the next sessions will be opening.

  • No formal entry requirements
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Learners must be at least 16 years old

NVQ qualification you will complete:

  • One qualification combining knowledge and competence, assessed via a combination of written work and on the job observations
  • Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Qualifications unless you are exempt
  • Application for this apprenticeship are only open at certain times of the year

Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

  • Continuous assessment during the course
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Workplace evidence
  • If taken as an apprenticeship then reviews with your assessor and employer will take place every 1-2 months and you will be expected to have developed your skills and knowledge between each review

On successful completion of this qualification learners may progress on to a Level 3 Clinical Health apprenticeship if available, and/or continue their employment.

  • Stationery - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course
  • Text books - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course, most text books are available to loan from the college library or online libraries
