Overview: 

For those interested in a career in any branch of engineering in particular local refinery and LNG industries this learning program is designed to give you the skills required.  Also, this program will equip you with what is required to progress into any part of the mechanical engineering sector.

As part of the learning program you will also study Performing Engineering Operations Level II

Next steps: 

Progression onto a Higher Education course such as a HNC, HND and degree is possible, or employment at trainee technician level.

Entry requirements: 
Five GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent)
to include:
-English
-Science
-Maths
First Diploma at merit plus 1 GCSE at Grade C or above or essential skills Level 2
Mature applicants - Each application considered on individual merit
Entry is normally subject to interview
What you will learn: 

The Extended Diploma course consists of 18 units

Year one

  • Mechanical Principles Applications
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Mathematics for Technicians
  • Health and Safety, Risk Assessment and Welfare in the Engineering Workplace
  • Properties and Application of Engineering Materials
  • Welding Principles
  • Engineering Drawing for Technicians
  • Business Systems for Technicians
  • Applications of Mechanical Systems and Technology

Year two

  • Project (Double Unit)
  • Communication for Technicians
  • Engineering Design
  • Mechanical Measurement and Inspection Techniques
  • Engineering Maintenance Procedures and Techniques
  • Principles and Applications of Engineering Measurement Systems
  • Electronic Measurement and Testing
  • Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulics Systems and Devices
  • Further Mathematics for Technicians

Key Skills are studied as part of this programme.

Welsh Baccalaureate is a mandatory part of this course.

Written Examination
The study of essential skills may be required

  • Stationery, memory stick
  • One A4 ring binder with 10 dividers
  • Drawing equipment
  • Overalls and safety boots
  • Scientific calculator
  • Although not essential an electronic notebook would be very useful

Full-time - No course fees
