Is this course right for me?
This two year part-time course is designed for those interested in pursuing a career in Carpentry but have not yet secured employment in the industry.
This course normally runs one day per week, for 34 weeks each year, starting in September and running over 2 academic years.

This course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and practical experience needed to develop a successful career in Site Carpentry. You will gain an understanding of:
- Social, economic and environmental sustainability within the construction and built environment sector.
- Employment opportunities and employability requirements within the construction industry.
- The professional behaviours and employability skills required in modern construction workplaces.
- Health and safety legislation and safe working practices when working on site, using equipment and working alongside other trades.
- The range of projects undertaken within the carpentry trade and how carpenters work with other construction professionals throughout the design, construction, maintenance and refurbishment stages of a project.
- The tools, materials, techniques and technologies used within the carpentry industry and how these have evolved over time.
- The technical knowledge required to meet current industry and national occupational standards.
- Practical carpentry skills through the completion of a wide range of workshop and site-based tasks.
- How to effectively plan, organise and evaluate your own work to meet industry standards.
Core Units
You will study the following core units:
- Employment and Employability in the Construction Sector
- Changing Practices Over Time
- Planning and Evaluating Work in the Construction Sector in Wales
Specialist Site Carpentry Units
You will also study specialist units including:
- Site Carpentry Core Knowledge
- Installing First and Second Fixing Components
- Erecting Structural Carcassing Components
- Maintaining Non-Structural Carpentry Work
- Setting Up and Using Transportable Cutting and Shaping Machines
Learners may have the option to complete course assessment/assignments or elements of the course through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.
- Continuous assessment during the course

- Portfolio of evidence
- Online examination
- Completion of a final major project
Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.
Future career opportunities include site carpenter, architectural joiner, shop fitter or creating fitted interiors.
