Is this course right for me?
This one year course is your way of entering the construction and built environment sector. Every construction learner in Wales wishing to embark on a full-time course in a construction trade will complete this qualification. The six core units are also part of every construction apprenticeship, so if you progress to an apprenticeship after this, you will already have completed a substantial part of the required learning.
What are the entry requirements?
- Four GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/English Literature/First Language Welsh and Mathematics/Numeracy
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
Current student - what are the entry requirements?
- Successful completion of relevant Level 1 programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting
What will I learn?
You will learn through a range of tasks within a ‘live’ workshop environment. These tasks will be supplemented with practical demonstrations which are designed to develop your awareness of the need for safe working practices, basic tool skills and accurate measurement. All of these skills are necessary to become a competent craftsperson.
As part of your course, you’ll study subject-specific units in Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment and Roofing. The main focus of your learning will be on electrical installation and systems, but you’ll also complete a short module in roofing to give you wider practical experience in another trade.
Throughout the course, you will:
- Discover how buildings and structures are created and how they’ve changed over time
- Learn about the wide range of trades, roles, and career opportunities in construction
- Explore the life cycle of a building, from planning and design through to use, maintenance, and end of life
- Understand how construction can be socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable
- Find out about the latest technologies shaping the future of the industry
- Develop essential employability skills that will prepare you for the workplace
- Gain knowledge of how to work safely, protect the environment, and look after your own health and well-being
- Get hands-on experience by planning, carrying out, and reviewing practical tasks in at least two construction trades

You may need to study an additional skills course depending on:

- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language

Workbased, progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty – you will study Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications.
Jobs Growth Wales (JGW+) programme – will be timetabled into literacy and numeracy sessions. To discuss the opportunity of attending a GCSE resit programme, in addition to their JGW+ timetable, please contact skills@pembrokeshire.ac.uk
Life Skills Academy programmes – you will have opportunities to upskill in English and Maths through Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) / Century or attending Essential Skills classes.
All other courses and those who have progressed through the internal progression route:
Upskilling Destination Programme – an hour and half session a week developing essential research skills, critical thinking, and academic writing techniques, supporting literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and employability skills
A one year GCSE Resit Programme in GCSE Mathematics Intermediate Tier (Welsh or English medium) / GCSE English Language
A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course in required subject/s – The priority of this programme (Foundation Maths for Mathematics pathway) is to build fundamental skill and knowledge, to prepare learners for progression onto the one-year, intermediate tier resit programme.
A one year pre-GCSE upskilling course in mathematics – The priority of this programme is to build fundamental skill and knowledge, to prepare learners for progression to the Foundation Maths programme.
Can I do this course in Welsh?
Learners have the option to complete course assessment/assignments or elements of the course through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

What can I do next?
Following successful completion of this Foundation course and progression board, learners will be invited to apply for the Level 2 Progression in Building Services Engineering in Electrical. Learners could also seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.

- Stationery - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course
- Textbooks - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course, most textbooks are available to loan from the college library or online libraries
- Technical drawing equipment - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course
- Electrical work trousers - £25
- Electrical safety boots/shoes - £14/£39

- No tuition fee
- You will need to pay a £55 construction workshop fee each year before you start the course
- You can rent a locker for £10 per year this will be refunded if the locker remains undamaged and keys are returned
