Is this course right for me?

This course aims to focus on the role and scope of a Gym Instructor, offering breadth and depth of study which incorporates a key core of knowledge and provides opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills.

This 30 week (one academic year) course normally runs on a Thursday evening, 18:00 – 21:00, starting in October.

  • No formal entry requirements
  • Life skills, experience and maturity are important
  • Should demonstrate a keen interest in physical activity and be physically fit
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • The learner must be over the age of 18

The objectives of this qualification are for learners to:

  • Demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to work as a Gym Instructor
  • Develop skills and knowledge in a range of areas relevant to their role, such as:
    • The principles of working in the gym environment, including customer service and how to maintain health, safety and welfare
    • Anatomy and physiology
    • How to conduct consultations and promote the health benefits of physical activity
    • How to communicate effectively and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme
    • How to plan and prepare a gym-based exercise programme

Units to be studied include:

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Maximising the customer experience in a gym environment
  • Supporting client health and well-being
  • Conducting client consultations and gym inductions
  • Planning and reviewing gym-based exercise programmes
  • Instructing and supervising gym-based exercise programmes

Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually.

  • Practical assessment during the course
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Written examination

Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to a higher level course at the College, seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.
