Is this course right for me?

This course investigates the theory of sport. It will provide you with the knowledge of the world of sport, exercise and physical recreation with emphasis placed on the fitness and coaching aspects. If you are outgoing, enthusiastic, love all sports and enjoy a challenge then this is the course for you.

Practical activities are an important feature of the course with students coaching and taking part in a range of sports that could include individual and team sports.

The Sports Academies in football and rugby for male and female applicants will be studied alongside this course. All learners will be expected to participate and contribute to one of the sports academies organised by the College. The experience of having additional skill acquisition, analysis of performance and team ethics will further enhance learners understanding of group dynamics benefitting them in their future employment.

Successful completion of the Extended Diploma in year two is equivalent to three A-levels.

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/English Literature/First Language Welsh and preferably Mathematics/Numeracy and Science
  • Should demonstrate a keen interest in physical activity and be physically fit
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant Level 2 programme with a merit grade or above in addition to a successful decision from progression board meeting
  • Preferably GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy at grade D or above
  • GCSE English Language/Literature/First Language Welsh at grade C or above
  • or evidence of improvement from internal GCSE/s

Units to be studied will include:

  • Careers in the sport and leisure industry
  • Health and wellbeing in sport
  • Developing coaching skills
  • Practical sports application
  • Applied coaching skills
  • Functional sports massage
  • Technical and tactical skills in sport

You will be required to attend tutorials as part of this programme.

You may need to study an additional skills course depending on:
  • the course you are taking at College
  • what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language
