Aberystwyth University collaborate with The John Burns Centre for Learning.

Pembrokeshire College recently welcomed 48 year one and year two Veterinary Science BVSc students from Aberystwyth University to the John Burns Centre of Learning accompanied by Professor Darrell Abernethy and Dr Sharon King.

The students were involved in a combination of theoretical based learning and practical handling. Animal Management staff Ginny and Russ Spenceley provided the students with an insight into the welfare, husbandry and handling of a wide range of species with some students handling insects and snakes for the first time!

Ginny and Russ commented: “It was a very rewarding two-way experience. We hope the veterinary students learnt a lot and had new practical experiences but for us it was very interesting and informative to view the subject from the veterinary viewpoint. Everybody learnt something.”

Professor Abernethy expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to visit the John Burns Centre: “We were delighted with the opportunity to use the Pembrokeshire College facility with its variety of exotic pets, highly competent staff and excellent facilities. I am certain this is the start of a collaboration that will be to the benefit of both institutions.”

The visit will further extend exciting collaborative opportunities between the university and the college within the animal care sector and broaden the scope of knowledge and skills for learners.

Thank you to the staff and students of Aberystwyth University, alongside our staff for making the sessions a great success!
