Is this course right for me?
Over 16’s can undertake an apprenticeship in Bricklaying. The course will comprise of:
- College based training one day per week over two years
- A practical project which is assessed in the workplace
- Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Qualifications
- From September 2026 all apprentices must start at Level 2, regardless of prior experience and qualifications (Welsh Government conditions)
To apply for an apprenticeship, you must have an employer willing to employ you for the duration of your apprenticeship. Qualifications cannot be achieved without employment in the trade.
Your employer will need to:
- Be able to release you one day per week to attend college
- Provide us with evidence of suitable insurance and evidence of your employment status
- Be happy to discuss Health and Safety procedures with your assessor
- Pay you the appropriate national minimum wage, including for college days
Delivery
- In college: one day per week in college over two years, 34 days per year.
- Up to 5 additional days for assessments or exams may be required.
- In the workplace: Employers must agree to monthly planned assessor visits to observe you and also to discuss your progress with a supervisor.
Learners must be at least 16 years of age and in employment for at least 16 hours per week. If you do not have an employer but would still like to join the one day per week training course, please apply to the part time course.
Places on Apprenticeship Programmes are limited and subject to capacity. An offer of employment does not guarantee an immediate place in college.
Transport: Please note that for apprenticeship courses the college day would normally end anytime between 5pm – 7pm, depending on the apprenticeship pathway you are following. As college buses leave at 4pm, you will need to ensure you have your own transport in place.
What are the entry requirements?
- No formal entry requirements
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course meeting or informal interview
- Learners must be at least 16 years old
What will I learn?
The main qualification consists of the following units:
- Construction workplace practices in Wales
- Bricklaying core knowledge
- Planning and reviewing work in the construction sector
- Conform to general workplace health, safety and welfare (NOS)
- Conform to productive working practices (NOS)
- Move, handle or store resources (NOS)
- Setting out to form masonry structures (NOS)
- Erect masonry structures (NOS)
- One of the following: erect masonry cladding (COSVR42) or erect thin joint masonry
Can I do this course in Welsh?
Learners may have the option to complete course assessment/assignments or elements of the course through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.
How will I be assessed?
- Practical assessment during the course
- Portfolio of evidence
- Workplace evidence
- Online examination
- If taken as an apprenticeship then reviews with your assessor and employer will take place every 1-2 months and you will be expected to have developed your skills and knowledge between each review
What can I do next?
You may wish to consider a Level 3 Apprenticeship in a single trade.
Do I need to bring/buy any equipment?
- Stationery - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Clothing, which you can purchase online before you start the course
