Is this course right for me?
This two year programme of qualifications combines theoretical knowledge with the practical skills needed to work within the sector. Aimed at post-16 learners in Wales, working or seeking to work, in regulated childcare settings.
Learners will complete the Level 2 CCPLD Core qualification in readiness for progressing onto the practical CCPLD qualification in the following academic year.
Alongside achieving the Core qualification, learners will create a practice portfolio in the following year which will focus on developing skills for working in a childcare setting. Learners will also be introduced to psychological and sociological influences in child development.
What are the entry requirements?
- Two GCSEs at grade C or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh
- Entry is subject to an enhanced DBS check
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
Current student - what are the entry requirements?
- Successful completion of relevant Level 1 programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting
- GCSE English Language/First Language Welsh at grade D or above
- or evidence of improvement from internal GCSE/s
- Successful decision from progression board meeting
- Entry is subject to an enhanced DBS check
What will I learn?
Preparation for Practice (Year 1)
CCPLD Core and Certificate in Skills for Further Study (Preparation for Practice)
- Project Completion – Learners will develop and practice their skills for planning for sessions that will allow them to plan, prepare and deliver activities with groups of children, or on a one-to-one level with children, within their childcare placement.
- Preparing Resources for Different Audiences – Learners will develop skills in designing, preparing and producing digital and non-digital resources for a variety of audiences, ready for use in practice. This will include creating resources that focus on a range of child development themes, which could be used to educate children, parents, caregivers and colleagues/peers.
- Developmental Psychology – Learners will begin to explore attachment theories and how associated conditions such as separation anxiety affect development.
- Sociology and Childhood – Learners will begin to explore how concepts such as the theory of nature vs nurturer, play a role in child development.
- Reflection on Practice and Work Placement – Learners will undertake two block placements of work experience, and will be taught how to plan for practice, set development goals and reflect on their own performance in preparation for their practice qualification.
- Exam Preparation – Learners will be taught key skills in preparation for completing CCPLD exams, including reading comprehension to analyse case studies and revision skills.
Work Experience – Learners will have 4 x 1 week block placements in a childcare setting throughout the year.
CCPLD Practice and Theory (Year 2)
- Supporting core practice in children’s care, play, learning and development
- Supporting play, learning, growth and development
- Supporting nutrition and hydration in early years
- Responding to signs of potential illness and infection/infestation
- Supporting the care of 0-2/2-3 year olds
- Understanding children’s care, play, learning and development
- Positive approaches to behaviour support in early years
Work experience – A minimum of 280 hours of work placement. This is an integral and mandatory part of completing this course.

- the course you are taking at College
- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language

- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications
All other courses:
- Upskilling Destination Programme – an hour and half session a week developing essential research skills, critical thinking, and academic writing techniques, supporting literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and employability skills
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
For English:
- A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
For Maths:
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only

Can I do this course in Welsh?

What can I do next?
Successful completion of this course may allow learners to progress to a relevant Level 3 course. If skills and success are shown in Year 1, there may be an option to fast-track to Level 3 CCPLD, which can lead to higher-level entry to employment or university. Alternatively progress into employment in a variety of roles including assistant play worker, childminder, nursery assistant, classroom assistant etc.
Please note, successful completion of Year 1 may allow learners to start working in a childcare setting, however the Level 2 Practice qualification will need to be undertaken whilst in a relevant job role to become fully qualified.

- Stationery - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course
