This is a training course designed to prepare you to successfully pass the formal Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) gas assessment.

Is this course right for me?

This course is for candidates wishing to enter the gas industry.

Gas Safety registration rules have changed and all new entrants (candidates who have not previously held Gas Safe registration) are required to undergo an approved managed learning programme (MLP) before undertaking their gas assessments.

This 30 week (one academic year) course normally runs on one day a week.

There are two classes of applicant for this course:

  • Category 2 trainees will hold a recognised qualification in the mechanical services engineering sector (eg. plumbing) but lack gas training and experience.
  • Category 3 applicants are new to the gas industry and will need more intense practical training (at an additional cost).

In order to progress to formal Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) gas assessments, all candidates will also need a period of supervised work experience with a qualified gas engineer.

The training will comprise of classroom and practical training on gas appliances.

Units to be studied will include:

  • Introduction and Practical
  • Gas Safety Legislation
  • Characteristics of Combustion
  • Ventilation
  • Installation of Pipework and Fittings
  • Testing for Tightness
  • Checking and/or Setting Meter Regulators
  • Identification of Unsafe Situations, Emergency Notices and Warning Labels
  • Operation and Positioning of Emergency Isolation Controls
  • Checking and Setting Appliance Burner Pressures and Gas Rates
  • Operation and Checking of Appliance Gas Safety Devices and Controls
  • Chimney Standards
  • Chimney Flue Testing
  • Installation of Open, Balanced and Fan Assisted Chimney Configurations
  • Re-establishing Gas supplies and Re-lighting Appliances
  • Domestic Central Heating and Water Heaters
  • Domestic Cookers
  • Domestic Space Heaters

Category Three applicants (with little or no practical experience) will need to undertake an additional programme of training in the bending, joining and testing of pipework at an additional cost.

Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually.

  • Continuous assessment during the course
  • Practical assessment during the course

After completion of the programme, you will be eligible to enter our ACS centre and take the CCN1 and Boiler Assessments.
