Esports is a multi-million pound industry brimming with opportunities. This course is the perfect place to begin shaping your future in gaming, marketing, event organisation or game development.
Is this course right for me?
Aimed at learners interested in pursuing a career in the rapidly growing esports industry, this course is endorsed by the British Esports Association and is equivalent to four GCSEs and ideal to progress onto a Level 3 course.
Focusing on essential skills and knowledge across various aspects of esports, including game analysis, team management and event organisation. Learners will engage in practical projects that enhance their technical abilities while also developing key transferable skills in business, information technology, communication and teamwork.
What are the entry requirements?
- Three GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh and Mathematics/Numeracy
Current student - what are the entry requirements?
- Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting
What will I learn?
Units will include:
- Esports games, teams and tournaments – investigate different genres of esports games, professional teams, leagues, online and live tournaments
- Establishing an Esports organisation – research different types of global sports organisations; create a brand for an esports organisation,using Adobe Design tools and plan how to promote it using social media advertising skills
- Streaming for Esports – develop the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to produce and edit live streams. Using various streaming platforms (including Twitch, Discord, Steam) along with streaming software to develop a unique live-stream.
- Planning an Esports event – create a plan for an esports event and pitch it to an audience who will provide feedback. Using project planning software and money management skills, market your esports event and if successful with the pitch, have an opportunity to plan a college esports tournament.
- Starting an enterprise in Esports – create a proposal for an enterprise within the esports industry, for example, a plan that includes a professional esports team, content creation, event hosting, merchandise sales, sponsorships and other related activities, essentially acting as a full-fledged company within the competitive gaming landscape.
- Designing an Esports game – examine different games and gaming principles and develop skills in planning and conceptualising, as well as creating an esports game design document. Learn the the basics of Unreal Engine and Gamemaker 2, to help visualise how popular games are created to help with design ideas.

You may need to study an additional skills course depending on:

- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language

- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications
All other courses:
- Upskilling Destination Programme – an hour and half session a week developing essential research skills, critical thinking, and academic writing techniques, supporting literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and employability skills
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
For English:
- A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
For Maths:
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
- A two year pre-GCSE upskilling course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
Learners studying on a Jobs Growth Wales (JGW+) programme will be timetabled into literacy and numeracy sessions. To discuss the opportunity of attending a GCSE resit programme, in addition to their JGW+ timetable, please contact skills@pembrokeshire.ac.uk
