City & Guilds Level 2 Health and Social Care: Principles and Contexts
This is a qualification developed for individuals working in, or intending to work, in the health and social care sector.
Is this course right for me?
The qualification is practice-based and assesses learners’ knowledge and competence to practice. It develops the learner’s ability to practically support health and care needs of adults in a range of settings and will enable them to develop and demonstrate their knowledge, understanding, behaviours, skills and practice within a health and social care setting.
It is strongly encouraged that learners have completed the core qualification prior to, or alongside this course as this will be a requirement for practice set by Social Care Wales.
What are the entry requirements?
- No formal entry requirements
- You will be expected to be in relevant job role
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
- Learners must be at least 16 years old

- Successful completion of relevant programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting
What will I learn?
The qualification enables learners to develop and demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding within the context of health and social care practice. It includes the following current issues in relation to Health and Social Care in Wales:
- physical, intellectual, emotional and social aspects that affect growth and development across the life stages of individuals
- the influence of life factors, lifestyle choices and life events on growth, health and well-being
- factors that shape self-concept
- the role and purpose of promoting health and well-being
- individual needs across all life stages
- opportunities and challenges both locally and across Wales
- the role and responsibilities of workers in the health and social care sector
- legislation and principles of care and support
Learners are required to undertake a minimum of 60 hours of sector engagement, of which at least 30 hours must be spent undertaking a work placement. Other forms of sector engagement could include workplace visits, guest lecturers and attending external conferences and events.
Will I need to study additional English & Maths skills?
- the course you are taking at College
- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language
If you are studying a construction/trade course (brickwork, carpentry, electrical or plumbing):
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications
All other courses:
- Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) in upskilling / Lessons in Financial Education
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course
- A one year GCSE START upskilling course

What can I do next?
This is for learners who gain employment in the sector in a support role and enables learners to qualify to as a Health and Social Care worker in a supervised capacity and apply for voluntary registration with Social Care Wales, providing that they also meet any the other registration requirements.
