Is this course right for me?

The IEMA Foundation Certificate is for anyone looking to upgrade their IEMA membership to Practitioner Level (PIEMA) and Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP). It is designed to give individuals a comprehensive understanding of ecological sustainability, making them or their businesses environmentally friendly and healthier. It provides learners with the knowledge, tools and skills to implement effective environmental management systems to reduce their environmental impact.  

This is a 15 day course taught in a virtual classroom.

The course will cover:

  • Justifying environmental management in the workplace using ethical, legal and financial arguments, linking these to broader environmental issues, including sustainable development
  • Recognising workplace activities that may be subject to environmental legislation or enforcement
  • Understanding the requirements of, and work within, an environmental management system whilst contributing to continual improvement
  • Assessing environmental aspects and associated impacts, determining significant factors and evaluating current controls
  • Supporting environmental emergency planning
  • Understanding the importance of reducing environmental harm; identify sources of noise, air, and water pollution; and suggest suitable control measures
  • Understanding the issues associated with waste and support responsible waste management
  • Understanding the benefits and limitations of a range of energy sources, and recommend appropriate measures to increase energy efficiency 

Module 1: Fundamentals of Sustainability, Business and Governance

  • Duration: 120 hours / 5 days
  • Preparation time: 2 hours
  • Assessment time: 4 weeks to submit

Module 2: Environmental Principles, Policy and Legislation

  • Duration: 120 hours / 5 days
  • Preparation time: 2 hours
  • Assessment time: 4 weeks to submit

Module 3: Environmental Management/Assessment Tool and Skills

  • Duration: 120 hours / 5 days
  • Preparation time: 2 hours
  • Assessment time: 4 weeks to submit
