Is this course right for me?

This is an introduction to pottery course.

If you’ve always wanted to know how you can turn a piece of soft, malleable clay into your very own work of art for the home, or as a gift for a friend or loved one, then this course will show you how.

No previous experience is necessary just a keen interest in being creative and an openness to exploring new ideas and processes. The course will focus on a range of ‘hand-building’ methods, with the aim to produce a series of finished, glazed pieces.

This course is non-accredited so you will not be assessed. It is for personal development and fun!

This eight-week course runs on a Thursday, 18:00 – 20:00, Pembrokeshire College Main Campus.

  • No formal entry requirements
  • The learner must be over the age of 18

The course aims to cover a range of ‘hand building’ techniques, covering methods such as pinching, coiling, slab-building, modelling, sculpting, surface pattern and decoration.

Each session will explore a particular method following a demonstration, which will in turn guide you towards a finished outcome of your own. Sessions will be structured to include timings for drying, firing, and glazing, with the aim to complete at least four finished ceramic pieces by the end of the course.

Enabling you to produce both functional and decorative items for the home, and as gifts, that will be kiln fired and glazed. Basic glazing methods and technical information will also be covered.

The course will provide you with an understanding of various building methods, safe art studio practice and an insight into the work of others as inspiration.

This eight-week course will not only allow you to develop your practical skills but will also promote your own creativity through making and discussing potential ideas with others.

You will receive a College completion certificate at the end of the course.

Learners have the option to complete course assessment/assignments or elements of the course through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.
