This course is designed for those looking to pursue a career in the building maintenance and property care sector providing skills in brickwork, decorating, plastering, plumbing and carpentry.

The UK property maintenance and repair market is valued at approximately £86 billion per year, creating a strong demand for skilled professionals in areas such as brickwork, decorating, plastering, plumbing, and carpentry.
Property owners, housing associations, landlords, and local authorities are actively seeking multi-skilled operatives to carry out small to medium-sized repair and maintenance work. This course equips learners with the diverse skill set needed to meet industry demands and secure employment in this growing sector.
This course will cover small-scale repairs in various trades in the Construction sector, for the following trades:
- Building repairs (Brickwork)
- Painting and Decorating repairs
- Plastering repairs
- Plumbing repairs
- Carpentry repairs
Training will be delivered by experienced tradespeople in purpose-built workshops, developing the hand skills and knowledge needed to produce professional finishes.
The course also looks at the the wider skills needed to succeed in the construction industry, including communication, numeracy, IT, and problem-solving—key attributes for today’s construction professionals.
What are the entry requirements?
- Three GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/English Literature/First Language Welsh or Mathematics/Numeracy
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview

- Successful completion of relevant Level 1 programme (including skills) and decision from progression board meeting

- Carry out carpentry repairs
- Health, safety, and welfare in construction
- Principles of building construction, information and communication

You may need to study an additional skills course depending on:
- the course you are taking at College
- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language

- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications
All other courses:
- Upskilling Destination Programme – an hour and half session a week developing essential research skills, critical thinking, and academic writing techniques, supporting literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and employability skills
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
For English:
- A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
For Maths:
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only
- A two year pre-GCSE upskilling course in required subject/s
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications, for Progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty only

What can I do next?
Following successful completion of this course learners may wish to progress to one of the Level 2 Foundation Qualifications or Level 3 Apprenticeship routes.
Do I need to bring/buy any equipment?
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Clothing, which you can purchase online before you start the course

- You will need to pay a £55 construction workshop fee each year before you start the course
- You can rent a locker for £10 per year this will be refunded if the locker remains undamaged and keys are returned
