Is this course right for me?
This course is aimed at those working in the automotive industry and wishing to gain recognised qualifications which could lead to progression or employment. Learners will develop and demonstrate their knowledge, understanding, behaviours, skills and practice in either light vehicles (cars and vans) or heavy vehicles (trucks and buses).
Each qualification must be completed within 12 months of enrolment.
What are the entry requirements?
- No formal entry requirements
- Level 3 applicants must either hold a relevant Level 2 qualification or at least two years industry experience
- You will be expected to be in relevant job role
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
- Learners must be at least 16 years old

What will I learn?
Mandatory Units:
- Competency in Health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
- Competency in supporting job roles in the automotive work environment
- Competency in materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices
- Knowledge of materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used
- Competency in removing and replacing vehicle combustion engine units and components
Learners will also choose from a range of optional units, depending on the job role, including:
- Competency in removing and replacing vehicle electrical units and components
- Competency in removing and replacing vehicle chassis units and components
- Competency in inspecting light using prescribed methods
- Competency in overhauling vehicle combustion engine mechanical units
Will I need to study additional English & Maths skills?
- the course you are taking at College
- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language
If you are studying a construction/trade course (brickwork, carpentry, electrical or plumbing):
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications
All other courses:
- Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) in upskilling / Lessons in Financial Education
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course
- A one year GCSE START upskilling course
Can I do this course in Welsh?

What can I do next?
Many learners progress to higher level qualifications in the same trade, or higher level qualifications in management.
