Is this course right for me?
This course is aimed at learners who work or want to work as fabrication and welding engineers in the engineering sector.
This course normally runs one day per week, for 34 weeks, starting in September.
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
Metal Inert Gas welding
Discover the preparation of materials and welding machines, consumables, gas and the basic fundamentals of MIG welding . Explore the art of completing diverse welding joints in various positions, and gain an understanding of the marking and testing standards as per BS 4872-1.
Fabrication of thick plate and bar
Learn the processes involved in material fabrication including marking out, shaping, cutting, and assembling materials. Learners will develop skills in producing fabrication pieces that meet specific criteria and fall within precise tolerances.
Principles of engineering technology
Explore the fundamental ideas from maths and science that form the backbone of engineering. Delve into the world of materials technology covering practical engineering calculations and the selection of materials, addressing their types, common supply forms, properties, and methods for altering those properties.
Principles of fabrication and welding technology
Get hands-on with the technology behind crafting and welding – explore the materials worked with, decode weld symbols, and understand the jargon. Test your creations in the workshop to look at dealing with distortions, defects and the handling of heat effects.
Health and safety
Encompassing the foundational knowledge and skills essential for functioning in an engineering environment. Emphasis will be placed on recognising and implementing safe working practices, considering environmental impact, and acquiring the ability to work effectively and efficiently.
Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.
