Independent Living Skills for Adults
Following the Colegau Cymru non-accredited programme, we teach a fundamental range that may include how to live independently, how to look after yourself, the importance of personal hygiene, how to use public transport, prepare simple food and drinks, and handle money.
Is this course right for me?
A person centred course for adults that require support to develop the skills required to live independently, improve employability skills, and continue to develop literacy and numeracy skills. A realistic approach ensures the learners needs and aspirations are met.
The Social Skills Assessment tool is used to identify strengths and to highlight areas for future development. Targets are set to help the learner develop new skills.
The course is one day a week and includes real life work experience opportunities.

The Social Skills Assessment tool is used to identify strengths and to highlight areas for future development. Targets are set to help the learner develop some of the following:
- Community Inclusion – Accessing community programmes, fundraising and self confidence building
- Employability – Work experience, organisation, time management, working independently, team work and preparing for an interview. Also, we have access to a work shop to improve practical skills such as wood work, basic computer repairs, bike, scooters and skateboard repairs
- Independence – Travelling independently, self-care, cooking, managing money, personal hygiene, problem solving
- Health and Wellbeing – Inclusive sport, social awareness, lifestyle, emotions, community involvement
- Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy
The following subjects may be included and are studied to help learners gather valuable life and social skills:
- Performing Arts
- Enterprise (Charity work)
- Horticulture
- Sport
- Personal Hygiene
- the course you are taking at College
- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language
Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) in upskilling / Lessons in Financial Education
A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course
A one year GCSE START upskilling course
Learners are able to complete either the full qualification or certain units or elements through the medium of Welsh/bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

We have an excellent partnership with Careers Wales Advisors and other external agencies. They, in conjunction with college transition representatives, help learners with suitable post-college opportunities. These may include advice on living independently, employment (voluntary work) or the next steps to further their education at the College or attendance at Adult Social Activity Centres.
- Stationery - you will be told about any specific items before you start the course
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Clothing, which you can purchase online before you start the course
- Practical/comfortable clothing for parts of the course

- There is an annual workshop fee for this course (£20 - £60), payable before you start the course
- You can rent a locker for £10 per year this will be refunded if the locker remains undamaged and keys are returned
