Is this course right for me?

This one year course focuses on traditional bricklaying and masonry skills, giving learners the experience of working with bricks, blocks and stone. The course also provides the opportunity to experience the popular and much needed trade of Civil Engineering which looks at the design and build of public structures used in everyday life. Both trades are at the heart of the booming construction industry and will give fantastic long life long career opportunities for motivated learners.

Experienced tradespeople will teach traditional hand skills with an emphasis also on developing wider skills in numeracy, literacy, problem solving and IT to prepare learners for the workplace or progression to foundation courses in construction.

  • Two GCSEs at grade G or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/English Literature/First Language Welsh and Mathematics/Numeracy
  • Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communication may be an acceptable equivalent to GCSEs
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview

This dynamic construction course provides learners with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to excel in the construction industry. Learn to lay paving using slabs, set out and lay gravel paths, and construct various types of brick and block walling, including half brick walling, block walling, half brick return corners, and one brick walling.

Additionally, the course covers essential techniques for laying block paving. Health and Safety in construction and an introduction to the construction industry are integral parts of the curriculum, ensuring that learners are well-prepared to work safely and effectively in their future careers. By the end of the course, learners will possess the expertise to undertake a wide range of construction tasks with confidence and precision.

Learners studying on a Jobs Growth Wales (JGW+) programme will be timetabled into literacy and numeracy sessions. To discuss the opportunity of attending a GCSE resit programme, in addition to their JGW+ timetable, please contact skills@pembrokeshire.ac.uk

Following successful completion of the Level 1 course, learners will be invited to apply for the Level 2 Foundation in Brickwork and Civil Engineeering.

Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to a higher level course at the College, seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.

  • We are waiving the Administration Fee for the academic year 2025/26
  • You will need to pay a £55 construction workshop fee each year before you start the course
  • You can rent a locker for £10 per year this will be refunded if the locker remains undamaged and keys are returned
