Dive into the exciting and innovative world of Esports (electronic sports) with this Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma.

In competitive video gaming, tournaments usually consist of amateur or professional gamers competing against one another. This course will provide learners with the necessary skills on how to healthily compete in tournaments, set up an Esports tournament, and learn the legal and ethical issues within the industry.

Upon successfully completing the first year of the course, learners will be awarded a Level 3 National Foundation Extended Certificate in Esports, the vocational equivalent to one A-level. Completing the second year leads to a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Esports, which is the vocational equivalent to three A-levels.

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh and Mathematics
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course meeting or informal interview
If you have gained your qualifications outside of the UK we will use ECCTIS to check their equivalence to UK qualifications. Please upload proof of your qualifications as part of the application process.
  • Successful completion of relevant Level 2 programme with a merit grade or above in addition to a successful decision from progression board meeting
  • GCSE English Language/First Language Welsh at grade C or above
  • GCSE Mathematics at grade C or above

The course will cover the following content:

Introduction to Esports – develop an understanding of the esports and traditional sports industries and related careers and other related industries such as sciences, technology, digital, business, sport and the creatives.

Esports skills, strategies and analysis – develop the understanding and skills to analyse esports performances and recommend improvements.

Enterprise and entrepreneurship in the Esports industry – study successful esports enterprises and the mindset of the entrepreneurs behind them.  Research, plan and pitch an esports start-up enterprise and gain feedback on the planning activity.

Health, wellbeing and fitness for Esports players – explore the importance of health, wellbeing and fitness in the esports industry. This will include investigating physical and mental health and suggesting ways to improve.

Esports events – work as part of a small group to plan, coordinate and manage an esports event and evaluate the skills gained.

Live-streamed broadcasting – explore and develop skills for the production, content development and broadcast of live-streamed esports and games.

Producing an Esports brand – investigate the role of branding in the esports industry. Plan and create branding and promotional content for the sale of branded products for an esports team.

Video production – develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills in video production for esports.

Games design – understand and examine styles of gameplay present in esports games. Generate game design ideas, as well as producing a game design document and explaining what makes a good esports game.

Shoutcasting – investigate shoutcasting and develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills for shoutcasting.

Esports coaching – develop the techniques, personal knowledge and ability to deliver coaching sessions.

Psychology for Esports performance – develop an understanding of the psychological demands of esports and develop techniques to improve performance.

Ethical and current issues in Esports – examine and explore ethical and current issues in esports.

Sports and Esports law and legislation – explore how the sports and esports industries meet legal obligations relating to employment rights considering the approaches used when resolving employment disputes.

Computer networking – examine modern computer networks design and plan, install and manage a computer network system.

Workbased, progression pathway programmes within the Built Environment Faculty – you will study Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications.

Life Skills Academy programmes – you will have opportunities to upskill in English and Maths through Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) / Century or attending Essential Skills classes.

All other courses and those who have progressed through the internal progression route:

Upskilling Destination Programme – an hour and half session a week developing essential research skills, critical thinking, and academic writing techniques, supporting literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and employability skills

A one year GCSE Resit Programme in GCSE Mathematics Intermediate Tier (Welsh or English medium) / GCSE English Language

A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course in required subject/s – The priority of this programme (Foundation Maths for Mathematics pathway) is to build fundamental skill and knowledge, to prepare learners for progression onto the one-year, intermediate tier resit programme.

A one year pre-GCSE upskilling course in mathematics – The priority of this programme is to build fundamental skill and knowledge, to prepare learners for progression to the Foundation Maths programme.

Learners may have the option to complete course assessment/assignments or elements of the course through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.

  • Continuous assessment during the course

Learners will be well prepared for careers within the esports sector such as an esports player, team coach, events organiser, shoutcaster and presenter, social media influencer, video production editor, photographer or data analyst.
