This is a unique learning opportunity for those seeking a maritime career on land or sea. This is the only pre-maritime cadetship in Wales.

Is this course right for me?

Our full-time Level 2/3 Foundation Cadetship course gives you the knowledge and skills required to launch a career in the fast-moving world of the Merchant Navy. A wide variety of opportunities exist on both land and sea including: Marine Renewables, Oil & Gas, Super Yachts, Ports & Harbours and the Merchant Navy (cruise liners, tankers, support vessels, ferries and cargo).

In partnership with the finest maritime school in the UK, Warsash Maritime School, you will be on a pathway to becoming a highly sought after maritime professional. If you see yourself as a Deck Officer, working alongside the Captain or a Marine Engineering Officer or an Electro-Technical Engineering Officer then this is the course for you.

 What makes this course different?

  • Two GCSEs at grade C or above to include Mathematics/Numeracy and Science (must include physics), plus English Language/English Literature/First Language Welsh at grade D or above
  • Each application is considered on individual merit
  • Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
  • Successful completion of relevant Level 1 programme with a merit grade or above in addition to a successful decision from progression board meeting
  • GCSE English Language/First Language Welsh at grade D or above
  • GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy at grade C or above
  • or evidence of improvement from internal GCSE/s

Units to include:

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Producing mechanical assemblies
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment
  • You will also attend regular tutorials

A maritime enrichment programme will run alongside the main qualification, which includes various maritime activities, including virtual deck training demonstrations with the Milford Haven Port Authority, and a visit to the simulation centre at Warsash Maritime School. Learners will also have an opportunity to gain qualifications in Navigation & Seamanship, the basics of Radio Operations, and gain a license to operate a power boat.
