UAL Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design
This course has been developed to provide learners with an interest in art and design with the opportunity to explore the materials, methods and processes that support art and design activities, and to begin to develop some related technical skills.
Is this course right for me?
On this one year course you will learn by completing assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. You will sample a range of vocational areas such as Art Practice, 2D and 3D Design. You will develop your understanding of materials and techniques and explore new ideas by creative use of drawing, painting and sculpture, and the use of visual language to communicate these ideas effectively.
What are the entry requirements?
- Three GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/First Language Welsh or Mathematics/Numeracy
- A portfolio/examples of work will be required for this course
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
Current student - what are the entry requirements?
- Successful completion of relevant Level 1 programme with a merit grade or above in addition to a successful decision from progression board meeting
What will I learn?
This programme consists of integrated units enabling experience in a range of disciplines.
You will:
- Work creatively with a wide range of 2D and 3D media and improve drawing skills
- Make 3D objects such as sculptures and ceramics
- Explore the potential of modern technology
- Use directed study to support assignment activity
- Work confidently in a group and independently
- Have practical demonstrations and discussions and use specialist materials and equipment
- Use notes, handouts and ICT
Units studied include:
- Unit 1 Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in art and design
- Unit 2 Introduction to contextual research in art and design
- Unit 3 Introduction to drawing skills
- Unit 4 Introduction to communication skills in art and design
- Unit 5 Solving 2D creative problems
- Unit 6 Solving 3D creative problems
- Unit 7 Solving time-based creative problems
- Unit 8 Developing and producing a personal project in art and design
Units 1-7 are delivered through a series of assignments and each unit must be attained prior to starting unit 8. The assignment for Unit 8 will decide the final grade awarded (Pass, Merit, Distinction).
Will I need to study additional English & Maths skills?
- the course you are taking at College
- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language
If you are studying a construction/trade course (brickwork, carpentry, electrical or plumbing):
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications
All other courses:
- Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) in upskilling / Lessons in Financial Education
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course
- A one year GCSE START upskilling course
Can I do this course in Welsh?
Learners have the option to complete course assessment/assignments or elements of the course through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. Visit our Welsh Language in the College page to find out what else is available to you.
How will I be assessed?
- Continuous assessment during the course
- Portfolio of evidence
- Completion of a final major project
What can I do next?
Following successful completion of this course learners could look to progress to a higher level course at the College, seek an appropriate Apprenticeship or go directly into employment.
Do I need to bring/buy any equipment?
- Art materials - you will be told about any specific items during or before you start the course

Are there any additional costs?
- No tuition fee
- We are waiving the Administration Fee for the academic year 2024/25
- You will need to pay a £70 art workshop fee each year before you start the course
- You can rent a locker for £10 per year this will be refunded if the locker remains undamaged and keys are returned
