Sport and fitness are rapidly expanding sectors within the UK resulting in lots of exciting career opportunities.
Is this course right for me?
This course investigates the theory of sport and fitness. It will provide you with the knowledge of the world of sport, exercise and physical recreation with emphasis placed on the fitness and well-being aspects. The programme provides a good variety of subjects for progression into employment or further study at university in fitness, sport nutrition, sport injuries and rehabilitation or health-related vocations. If you are outgoing, enthusiastic, love fitness and physical activity and enjoy a challenge then this is the course for you.
Practical activities are an important feature of the course with students taking part in a range of fitness and sport activities.
The Sports Academies in football and rugby for male and female applicants will be studied alongside this course. All learners will be expected to participate and contribute to one of the sports academies organised by the College. The experience of having additional skill acquisition, analysis of performance and team ethics will further enhance learners understanding of group dynamics benefitting them in their future employment.
Successful completion of the Extended Diploma in year two is equivalent to three A-levels.
What are the entry requirements?
- Five GCSEs at grade C or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include English Language/English Literature/First Language Welsh and preferably Mathematics/Numeracy and Science
- Should demonstrate a keen interest in physical activity and be physically fit
- Each application is considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to attending a course information session or informal interview
Current student - what are the entry requirements?
- Successful completion of relevant Level 2 programme with a merit grade or above in addition to a successful decision from progression board meeting
- Preferably GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy at grade D or above
- GCSE English Language/Literature/First Language Welsh at grade C or above
- or evidence of improvement from internal GCSE/s

- Health and wellbeing in sport
- Fitness skills development
- Nutrition
- Sport injuries
- Fitness testing
- Functional sports massage
- Self-employment in sport and physical activity
- Personal trainer skills development
You will be required to attend tutorials as part of this programme.
Will I need to study additional English & Maths skills?
- the course you are taking at College
- what grades you gained in your GCSE Maths and/or English Language
If you are studying a construction/trade course (brickwork, carpentry, electrical or plumbing):
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) in Application of Number and Communications
All other courses:
- Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) in upskilling / Lessons in Financial Education
- A one year GCSE resit course in required subject/s
- A one or two year pre-GCSE upskilling course
- A one year GCSE START upskilling course
Can I do this course in Welsh?

- We are waiving the Administration Fee for the academic year 2024/25
- You will need to pay a £60 fitness facility fee each year before you start the course
- Specific sports kits (£110 - £160) payable before you start the course
